I’ll preface this post by sharing that Apple Cider Vinegar is really as bad as it sounds.
Back in December, when it seemed like everyone and their mother was sick, I read up a bit on proven ways to boost your immune system. Cue a long list of options and my insane self decided to go with Apple Cider Vinegar. What’s even better is that I convinced Conor to give it a go with me.
Honestly, I didn’t do proper research on how to consume the ACV, so we went with a shot. The only thing I did research (which was imperative in order to convince Conor to join me) was Why Drink ACV daily?
So, the burning question. Why drink Apple Cider Vinegar?
Apple Cider can be used in many different ways such as in your hair in place of shampoo to help give it some extra shine. When consumed, ACV has the following health benefits:
- Improves immune system
- Aid in digestion & helps your gut
- Reduces bloating & inflammation of all sorts
- Can help you lose weight (because it suppresses your appetite)
- Increases metabolism
- Reduces water retention
- Balances the pH of your skin (helping it appear clearer)
- Boosts energy
- Whitens teeth
- Controls blood sugar
That’s a sh*t ton of benefits, so as you can imagine, I was IN when I found out it not only would reduce my chances of getting sick, but help with so many other things. I bet I have your attention now, huh?
Fast forward to the experience of taking an ACV shot. To start, we didn’t take it straight. I made a concoction I found on Pinterest comprised of the following ingredients…
- 1 tbsp ACV
- 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1 tsp Honey
- Sprinkle of Cayenne Pepper
To save some time in the morning and to ensure we could easily stick with the regimen, I created a big jug of the concoction for us to pour into a shot glass each morning.
And we arrive at the part you’ve all been waiting for. Taking the shot.
The first day, we downed the shot and I literally didn’t know if I was going to throw up or have a heart attack. It was honestly worse than taking a shot of sh*tty alcohol. My eyes instantly watered and I immediately reached for my smoothie to help suppress the acidic taste in my mouth. Then, for about an hour after taking the shot, I had a tightness in my chest that did not feel good at all.
After a few days of taking the shot, we decided to pour half a shot glass full, then dilute the rest with water. This helped, but the acidic taste was still not pleasant at all.
It ended up taking between 7 and 10 days to get used to taking a dose of the acidic torture potion to start my day. It was also around then that I started seeing the benefits of putting myself through such torture. I will say, once you get used to it and start to see the benefits of taking it, it makes it all worth it.
While many of the proven benefits I shared earlier are internal and there aren’t ways to tell if my body actually experienced them, I will share a few things that happened.
1 – It woke me the hell up.
You can only imagine how awake you feel after consuming something so strong first thing in the morning. I do suggest drinking at least 1 cup of water before taking it to ease your stomach. I also noticed an increase in my energy levels.
2 – My skin definitely reaped the benefits.
I really wish I took a before and after picture, but I noticed my skin started to clear up tremendously. I don’t typically have skin troubles, but I noticed my skin was extra clear and almost had a sort of a glow to it.
3 – Less bloating. Yasss!
Such a plus. I had been feeling super puffy from all the sh*t consumed over the holidays. I noticed I wasn’t feeling as bloated as I was previously. This goes for the bloat in my face too. I can’t help that I have massive cheeks, but I noticed a bit of a decrease in puffiness there.
4 – Even though my eating hasn’t been the best recently, I still felt detoxed.
In all honesty, my diet hasn’t been A+ recently as Conor and I have been eating out a lot. Even though my diet hasn’t been up to par recently, I still feel like the acidic concoction helped detox my gut.
5 – I stayed healthy.
And we’re back to the reason I started this crazy habit in the first place. Seems like everyone is getting sick this time of year but not your girl here! Healthy as can be. Can’t complain about that!
Would I recommend it to someone else?
Overall, it’s been an interesting experience. I have to say, the benefits I’ve noticed are promising, but if I could find another way to get the same effect (perhaps lemon and ginger), without the horrid taste to start my day, I would try it. For now, I’m sticking with it!
If you’re thinking about trying it yourself…
It turns out you shouldn’t take ACV in shot form because the acid is bad for your teeth and digestive system. Oops! That explains why I felt so horrible those first few days. Mix 1-2 tablespoons with 8 ounces of water (1 cup). We’ve done this the past few days and it’s still tough to down in the morning, but if you put a little honey on the rim of your glass, you’ll be fine.
Hope I answered all of your questions about this (hmmm…) interesting experience. Have any questions? Have you taken ACV shots/drinks before yourself? I want to hear about it! Share your experiences or questions in the comment section below.
