How to Discover When to Workout According to Science

Yes, you heard that right. According to doctor Michael Breus, author of The Power of When, there is a “right” and “wrong” when it comes to the perfect time to go to sleep, workout, have coffee, eat, focus, and so much more. It’s pretty incredible if you ask me.

It’s been about a year since I learned of this interesting science phenomenon, but since switching to becoming a Realtor and being in 100% control of my schedule, I started following my chronotype schedule very seriously. For instance, working out in the mornings used to be a non-negotiable, but ever since switching, I’ve allowed myself to workout whenever I felt was natural and noticed I now like to workout in the evenings, which is what my chronotype suggests.

You’re probably wondering… what the f**k is a chronotype and how can I find out what my chronotype is?! Hang tight, I’ll get there.

Let’s start with what a chronotype is…

I’m sure you’ve heard the terms “early bird” or “night owl,” right? Well a Chronotype is the behavioral manifestation of your biological clock. Another way to think of it is if your schedule wasn’t governed by anything or anyone, it is when you would naturally wake up, workout, eat, go to sleep, etc.

In The Power of When, Doctor Michael Breus introduces the 4 kinds of chronotypes, characterized as animals and the typical behavior of each animal. 

The Bear 

This is what I am! 50% of the general population are bears. Bears aren’t necessarily early birds or night owls, they’re the happy medium. They tend to wake up and go to sleep with the sun, they’re most productive in the daylight.

The Lion

This chronotype describes your “early birds.” Only about 15% of the population are lions and can often be described as your drill sergeants who get shit done before the sun rises. They are also often very regimented.

The Wolf

And your “night owl,” also 15% of the population. These are the creatives who stay up late and typically are going to sleep when some lions wake up.

The Dolphin 

The remaining 10% of the population who struggle with insomnia or other sleep disorders. They are awaken from faint noises or lights. Many are type A, driven, loyal, and oftentimes have a twinge of OCD.

So why should you get to know what chronotype you are? 

Knowing your chronotype is a total game changer. It is essentially hacking your life to get the most out of it.

It is knowing when to go to sleep and set your alarm to wake up for the best possible sleep.

Knowing when to focus to be most productive.

Knowing when to exercise to get the best workout.

Knowing when to brainstorm or write to use the peak of your creativity each day.

Knowing when to eat to have the most energy.

Who wouldn’t want to take advantage of that?!
