It’s been a minute since I’ve published a blog post, so what’s up guys!
The past couple weeks, I’ve been pretty caught up in work and the time I’ve had to sit down and write, I would feel exhausted with no burning topic to share. On top of all that, Conor and I bought a house!! We are so excited and now begins the moving and little projects throughout the house. 🙂
So… let’s dive into the nitty gritty of today’s blog!
It’s been a long time coming, but yesterday, I officially started Kayla Itsines’ BBG 1.0 Guide and holy crap… I forgot how hard it is!!! It’s been probably a year/year and a half since doing BBG, but it’s what I needed. 2017 was the year of running and while I am proud of myself for completing my first marathon this past fall, I knew it was time to get back to strength training.
Since the marathon, I was intuitively working out and eating. I had at least developed the habit and discipline of getting to the gym or a spin class consistently, but the structure in my gym routine was non-existent. One week, I would go to two spin classes and create my own arm HIIT circuit, the next week, I’m on the weight machines, blasting every part of my body, the week after that, all I can summon the energy to do is walk on the treadmill.
I’m sure the inconsistency in training kept my muscles guessing, but I wasn’t seeing the kind of results I was hoping for. Duh. That’s what inconsistency gets you!
I started thinking back through my fitness journey to remember when I felt my best, both physically and mentally. If I could figure that piece out, I would go back to what I was doing at that time.
What I found was it was when I was religiously following the BBG guides.
I was scrolling through old photos and found the crazy progress from BBG. I forgot that at one point, I had abs! (FYI… for those training for a race… it’s not uncommon to lose those abs with all the carbs you eat; I did!) If you think I’m kidding, below are the photos that made me realize BBG was where it all started and where I needed to go back to.
Even though it was a Tuesday, I didn’t give a flying f**k about waiting for next Monday to start. I just decided I would start immediately while I was motivated and so I couldn’t talk myself out of it. I set a time I would go to the gym that day, re-downloaded the guide on my phone (old school PDF BBG’er, hayy), and just did it.
Holy shit… it absolutely kicked my ass.
Call me crazy, but I was SO happy that it kicked my ass the way it did. It affirmed that my intuitive workouts weren’t doing what they should have and I became excited to tackle these next 12 weeks of ass-kicking workouts. To see the physical and mental progress that would come with it.
My point in sharing this with you all is that if you are failing at something, it’s time to get back to the basics.
You can do this by envisioning a time when you were successful or content with your performance/results in that area. What were you doing? Once you have that, just get back to doing that again.
Failure can also stem from a lack of structure.
My workout regimen clearly had no structure to it, so it was time to add it. Structure ensures consistency. By following BBG, I know I will have to find a time to squeeze in three 28-minute resistance workouts a week at minimum. Outside of that, I can get in my cardio workouts by attending spin classes or walking on the treadmill. That will be where I’ll give myself the creative freedom to keep it spiced up.
Sharing with others keeps you accountable to succeed.
I created my fitness account when I started BBG to hold myself accountable, just like so many other fitness accounts out there. It’s so funny to see how the fitness community on Instagram has vastly changed from post-workout mirror selfies (as pictured above) to curated professional photography. The problem with the later is it does nothing for what used to be the main goal of these Instagrams, accountability!
So, with that being said… I’m going to get back to the old school days and start sharing those post-workout selfies to hold myself accountable. I’m telling you all I’m starting BBG again because I would look like an ass if I quit mid-way through. And Conor would kill me for sharing this, but I’ve recruited him to do it too so we can keep each other accountable.
